About the Park
Hong Lim Park
Hong Lim Park has long served as a gathering place for recreation, storytelling and public expression. Originally named Dunman’s Green after Singapore’s first Superintendent of Police, it was renamed Hong Lim Green in 1876 after businessman Cheang Hong Lim helped establish it as a public garden. Over the decades, the park hosted sporting clubs, Chinese opera performances, public film screenings, political rallies and community activities.
In 2000, Hong Lim Park became home to Singapore’s first and only Speakers’ Corner, where citizens could deliver public speeches without a Public Entertainment Licence. After regulations were expanded in 2008 to permit demonstrations by Singaporeans without police permits, the park developed into an important site for civic gatherings and public discourse.

Our Mission
Voices of Hong Lim is a youth-led public history initiative documenting the evolution of Hong Lim Park through a multilingual timeline, archival research, oral histories, guided audio content and immersive digital interpretation.
The project aims to help the public better understand the park’s changing role in Singapore’s recreational, cultural, societal, and community heritage.
